Professor Harm Peters, MD, MHPE
President of the Association of Medical Schools in Europe e.V. (AMSE)
Harm Peters is Professor of Medical Education and Medicine at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany and Master of Health Professions Education. He has been actively involved in educational reform initiatives as a teacher and curriculum developer for more than two decades. H. Peters is Director of the Dieter Scheffner Center for Medical Education and Educational Research at the Charité. The Dieter Scheffner Center consists of a multidisciplinary team of curricular experts in the fields of curriculum development, faculty development and educational research. The Center is responsible for all faculty development activities related to teaching at the Charité. Each year, approximately 500 faculty members receive training in academic teaching. Topics include teaching and learning in general as well as training in specific learning formats such as PBL, bedside teaching, communication, simulation and microteaching.
At the Charité, Harm Peters was appointed to lead the project team for the development and implementation of the new Modular Curriculum of Medicine at the Charité from 2010 to 2016. This is a six-year programme and represents a fully modular, integrated, competency-based, student-centred and patient-centred curriculum for undergraduate medical education. The program is is one of the largest in Europe, with more than 600 students are enrolled each year (approximately 4.000 enrolled in total). The new Charité programme is one of the first to use entrustable professional activities (EPAs) as its main longitudinal structure and to use EPAs as educational outcomes. Under the lead of Harm Peters, the Charité received in 2015 the Aspire Award for Excellence in Medical Education in the field of Student Engagement and the Aspire Award in 2020 for Curriculum Development. Harm Peters has expertise in curriculum development, student engagement, case-based learning, problem-based learning, clinical reasoning, interprofessional education, scholarly work and competency-based education in undergraduate medical education.
Harm Peters is member of the German Society for Medical Education, where he chairs the “Students as Teachers” committee. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), and a past Chair of the ASPIRE Academy for Recognition of Excellence in Medical Education. Harm Peters is a member of the German Society for Faculty Development and the Special Interested Group on Faculty Development of AMEE. He served as Treasurer of AMSE from 2015 to 2020.
