Global medical education and health workforce resilience will form part of the discussion on the health costs of climate change
Dr. Marisa Nimrod, Inaugural Executive Director of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), will represent the Federation at The Health Costs of Climate Change, an invitation-only roundtable programmed by Economist Enterprise on the sidelines of Climate Week NYC.
The roundtable will take place on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, at the Paramount Club in New York. Leaders from healthcare, public policy, finance, academia and climate resilience will consider how climate-related health risks are affecting workforces, infrastructure and economic development, and where investment can most effectively strengthen preparedness and resilience.
Dr. Nimrod will contribute WFME’s global medical education perspective, emphasising that climate-resilient health systems require health professionals who are appropriately educated, equitably distributed and continuously supported. Medical education quality, accreditation and recognition standards are essential to preparing the workforce to identify climate-related illness, respond to changing patterns of disease and protect vulnerable communities during periods of disruption.
“Climate resilience is also a question of human capacity. Health systems cannot remain resilient unless their professionals are prepared to recognise new risks, serve vulnerable populations and lead through disruption. Medical education must therefore be part of climate and health planning from the outset,” Dr. Nimrod said.
She will also bring attention to the experience of the Caribbean, Africa and other climate-vulnerable regions, where health systems face disproportionate climate pressures despite comparatively low contributions to global emissions. Their realities should help shape international investment, policy and cross-sector action.
The private roundtable will be conducted under the Chatham House Rule and will focus on practical approaches to prevention, investment and coordination across the health, climate, labour, housing, infrastructure and finance sectors.
