• An accrediting agency with extensive experience conducting accreditation activities in multiple countries across a region, including work in conflict-affected settings.
• A medical school that has undergone cross-border accreditation delivered by an agency based outside its home country.
• Collaboration between accrediting agencies to support accreditation aligned with WFME Recognition.

Background:
WFME has received a growing number of enquiries regarding accreditation activities undertaken by recognised agencies outside their original country of operation. In response, WFME has established a policy to ensure that such activities are appropriately assessed within the Recognition Programme.

This assessment includes verifying that agencies are recognised by relevant local authorities, that their accreditation decisions have formal standing in the target country, and that their policies, procedures, and standards are suitable for the local context. Specific criteria address the quality, governance, and consistency of cross-border accreditation processes, as well as collaboration with local authorities.

Through this framework, WFME aims to ensure transparency and maintain the integrity and rigour of its Recognition Programme when considering cross-border activities.
