Our attention has been drawn to a directive published by the Ministry of Health of Israel, which sets out requirements for medical students who plan to study outside Israel and then to apply to work in Israel. WFME would like to clarify several facts about the process of Recognition.
The directive requires the graduate to come from a medical school that “has gone through a WFME accreditation process”.
WFME does not accredit individual medical schools, WFME assesses accrediting agencies. Through its Recognition Programme, WFME evaluates the legal standing, accreditation process, post-accreditation monitoring, and decision-making processes of an accreditation agency for programmes or schools of basic medical education. WFME Recognition Status of an agency confers the understanding that the quality of medical education in its accredited schools is at an appropriate and rigorous standard.
At this moment, 13 accrediting agencies have Recognition Status and a further ten are in various stages of the process. The numbers of medical schools accredited by bodies recognised by WFME will increase substantially as we approach the deadline of 2023 set by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates of the USA for the overseas students applying for licensure in the USA.
WFME is currently in communication with the Ministry of Health of Israel about the matter.
