New edition of WFME Standards for Basic Medical Education

December 21, 2020

WFME is pleased to announce that the new, third edition of the WFME Standards for Basic Medical Education is now available on our website here. This edition of the standards adopts a new, principles-based approach to allow users of the standards to make their own version of the basic standards appropriate to the local context.

WFME has always emphasised that the standards are a guide to the development and evaluation of medical education in all settings. They are not prescriptive, and not a rule-book. They are intended to be used as a framework to be modified and customised for the local setting. There are many sets of standards in local use which were developed from the first and second editions of the WFME standards for basic medical education. If those local standards remain good and efficient, there is no need for them to be revised.
