WFME endorses NGO joint statement

March 21, 2022

WFME is proud to, along with other 47 NGOs and 7 networks of NGOs, endorse the NGO joint statement on the impact of counterterrorism measures and sanctions on humanitarian action.

Following with concern the evolving crisis in Ukraine and ahead of the upcoming European Humanitarian Forum (EHF) the NGOs are faced with challenges regarding the impact of restrictive measures on humanitarian action, such as counterterrorism measures, sanctions and the subsequent restrictions, due diligence, and compliance obligations.

Yemen, Afghanistan, and Mali are the most recent examples where it is necessary to ensure that restrictive measures do not delay or impede the humanitarian aid. Similarly, it is of utmost importance that sanctions targeting Russia do not affect the aid provided to Ukraine, including in territories that are not under the control of the Ukrainian government. All this is to ensure that aid targets those who need it, in alignment with humanitarian principles.
