PGME Cross Border Accreditation Policy

PGME Cross Border Accreditation Policy

The World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) Executive Council has approved a Cross Border Accreditation Policy for the WFME Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Recognition Programme.

Modelled on the existing policy for the Basic Medical Education (BME) Recognition Programme, this framework sets out a clear and robust process for accrediting agencies that wish to extend their WFME Recognition Status to additional countries or territories.

WFME Recognition Status is territory-bound. This means it applies only to the country (or countries) for which the original Recognition Status was awarded. While agencies may accredit programmes or institutions if invited and permitted by local authorities, such accreditation does not carry WFME Recognition Status unless the agency is recognised for that respective territory. To maintain the quality of their services, agencies wishing to extend their accreditation activities to other countries must ensure that their processes align with the local context.
