Sentinel article on ECFMG’s 2023 Medical School Accreditation Requirement

ECFMG’s paper “Advancing the Quality of Medical Education Worldwide: ECFMG’s 2023 Medical School Accreditation Requirements” in the Journal of Medical Regulation provides a succinct explanation of the evolution and rationale for the 2023 Accreditation requirement, its current progress and future.

ECFMG has announced that starting in 2023, individuals applying for ECFMG Certification, which is required for international medical graduates to enter graduate medical education (GME) in the United States, must be a student or graduate of a medical school that is appropriately accredited. More specifically, the school must be accredited by an accrediting agency that is officially recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).

ECFMG, seeking to promote a higher global standard of under-graduate medical education, encourages schools in countries where accreditation is voluntary to obtain accreditation, and require agencies that accredit these schools to bring their processes in line with internationally accepted criteria.

The WFME Recognition Programme is the only program accepted by ECFMG at this time for the recognition of agencies that accredit basic medical education.
