WFME Executive Council meet for strategic discussions 

The WFME Executive Council members gathered on 8 to 10 April in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, for their regular annual meeting. The Executive Council is the ultimate policy-making body responsible for the oversight and strategic direction of the organisation. The Council typically meets twice a year – usually once in person in spring and once online in the autumn.

In addition to the efforts for continuous quality improvement, the Council discussed and accepted new policies, especially in the Recognition of Accreditation Programme. The meeting also included a full-day strategic planning session to reflect and arrive at a consensus regarding the priorities for future development, both short-term and long-term.

The strategic planning session sought to review the mission and vision statements of WFME and establish the priorities and core values that underlie the direction of the organisation. The session summarised and further developed information gathered from a widely distributed survey, as well as dedicated online discussions with various stakeholders.

The Council appointed new members of the Finance, Remuneration and Risk Committees. Dr Eric Holmboe joined the Finance and Remuneration Committees and Dr Aviad Haramati joined the Risk Committee.

Members of the Council discussed and approved changes to the Recognition of Accreditation Programme, predominantly related to the new Recognition Criteria and a more robust cross-border accreditation policy. A detailed update on the changes will be published on the WFME website in the following weeks.

The Council reiterated its dedication to further develop and improve the World Directory of Medical Schools, which is managed jointly by WFME and FAIMER.

Members updated the Council on their progress in sharing their support to the Declaration on Planetary Health.

The next in-person meeting of the Executive Council will take place at the WFME World Conference 2025 in May 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand.
